Review: Kiosk inauguration “Zur FÜRstin” – From the neighborhood for the neighborhood

The change in the FÜRstenried West district has been visible for a year now. In the past summer weeks, something new has now been built in the heart of the district next to the ongoing construction sites over a period of four weeks: the FÜRstin neighborhood kiosk. It has a slightly different history than the surrounding buildings.

The construction history of the neighborhood kiosk is based on the idea of erecting the small pavilion-like building from recycled materials. The construction and operation of buildings accounts for a large proportion of energy requirements, and construction and demolition waste makes up 55% of the waste generated in Germany. To counteract this, FÜRstenried West was able to track down sources of materials from which the kiosk has now been built. The carpentry collective Belwerk, in cooperation with the carpentry firm Plan B, embarked on an experimental approach: Trees that had to be felled as part of the renovation work along Appenzeller Strasse had already been cut into construction timber by a mobile sawmill last year. This was then used to build the kiosk’s basic structure. Materials were “rescued” from other buildings in the district that were destined to be thrown away due to renovation and demolition.

See for yourself what the young carpenters have achieved in collaboration with the architects from STUDIO STADT REGION: Can you recognize the former balcony doors? The narrow vertical windows in the kitchen area were once balcony windows. Door frames were made from the teak railings of the staircase. The counter in the outdoor area was also made from elements of the banisters. Materials from the flat roofs were reused for both the roof and the foundations.

Inside the kiosk, you will no doubt recognize the old hallway cupboard doors, which are now used as wall cladding. Want to discover more?
